I know that I should be feeling incredibly relieved and congratulating myself and everyone else that's worked on Dancescapes because it looks so good but I can't seem to. It's just that at the moment all I can think about is all the mistakes in the captions people were helpful enough to point out and the fact that now the show is over my departure has come into view. I feel like I have a hole in me. It's hardly a relief to know that tomorrow I'll have the Kama Sutra text to fill that hole.
Last night we were all (Mandy, Alka, Saurabh, Khushal, Ravi and myself) in the gallery beavering away at getting the show in order. Alka took me out to eat at IIC (India International Centre) as we didn't have time to go to her house and back before we had to start working. It was a lovely meal, and, though I know I shouldn't have done this, was actually incredibly cheap considering that three of us ate and it is quite an exclusive place. Our companion was one of Alka's friends and she was such a whiner that I didn't put much effort into the conversation. When we got back to the gallery Shobha had turned up and was talking of her worries and her advice for the layout of the show. Alka's friend didn't help by encouraging all of her comments. Especially as at the meal she'd said how much she couldn't stand her. Pfffffft.
We worked until twelve and Rahul met us and we (he, Mandy and I) went to Meyer's birthday party at her house in Lodi Colony. All of her friends were pretty arrogant apart from one lovely woman who'd just come back from from New York and was happy to discuss Delhi from an outsider's perspective with me.
We hung out and danced and left at half two to pick Alka up on the way to South Ex. This didn't work quite as expected as I had to supervise and proof read all of the text panels but I certainly remember feeling pretty happy with how everything was going. Walls were painted, photos were hung and vinyl had been stuck. We left about ten past three and then Mandy and I hung out a bit more at her house and ate garlic toast.
This morning I was woken before nine despite Mandy saying that she wouldn't be up until ten. Breakfast of mattar paneer and all mehta and roti made up for this. I got into work after about two hours work at Alka's at 12. We had the vinyl printer correct all his mistakes. Saumya and I tried to get a photo for me to give in to UEA for my alumni prospectus interview but I came across surprisingly awkward in front of the camera. I then went to Meher Chand market with Mandy, and then again with Saumya as a welcome break from the endless finishing of the space. Mandy and I had a beer at lunchtime which made me mega tired but we did manage to have a good chat and resolve our tiny tiff from Saturday in which she'd said I had a bad attitude.
As I have said before, the show looked great, and the turnout was great. Shobha sold a great deal of books and I got to hang out with Devshree and Kruttika. Izzy couldn't make it as she has finally got the belly. She'd been crying in the house all night and day. My worry for her kept distracting me so I'm sure I wasn't at my best for Alka etc.
I got back before ten after turning down a holi party with Alka's family because Izzy definitely needed my presence more. I know how savage I felt being ill alone here,
Also, I conducted a social experiment when I left on Sunday which I got to see the results of once I was back at the house. After what Izzy had said about Simar being in and our of our room looking guilty I saw him watching me put my book under my pillow when he came into the room. This is because it was a K S and I didn't want him to find out. I could tell he was making a mental note. so the following morning I translated 'nosy Parker' into Hindi and wrote it on a piece of loo roll and put it under my pillow. Tonight the paper is gone and Simar is acting aggressively towards me. I presume he found it. I hope he went to his parents with it to ask them what it meant.

Today I took some nice photos on my tablet and planned to post them at McDonalds and then went there and didn't put the post up. I am such a goon. (Edit: I have now done this, see post below)

We are putting up Dancescapes tonight, I cannot wait for it to be over with! I am sleeping at Alka's house as we will be working very late and I don't want to go back to the Sikhs' and give them a reason to be annoyed with me.

We listened to Vikram Seth Last night, and he was awesmazing. He loved the sound of his own voice but I did too so that didn't matter.

The music was good yesterday night. As were the drinks. The conversation wasn't though. The author who I was saying was famous (Shobhaa De) was a rubbish speaker and was spouting some terribly one sided feminism. I love feminism, I just hate it when it's used either in a too general or too unconsidered way.
The music was good though. And because we'd been sitting around for most of the day we knew how best to get comfortable, so we both laid out on three pillows each in an almost completely lying position. We spoke to one of the musicians afterwards to tell him he was good and he said he thought we had been sleeping.
They were called The Men Who Pause. A bit crude really.
After the gig there was an open bar so by the time we got home we were a little drunk. Good old Indian free bars. We got off the Vikram at our stop as usual and there was an intriguing little pop-up temple, so we had a look. The guys were nice and gave us yellow bindis.

Today Mandy visited the office to do some work and we didn't end up doing much. It seems to always be the way. I have been reading the Kama Sutra and proof reading all day and so as it's a Saturday I feel I have earned our trip to a jazz festival tonight.

I have another idea about why I'm having all this deja vu (it's been less wrought with terror but still pretty consistent). I have not felt threatened in any situation since I got here so I feel like my mind is dosing me with fear because I'm so used to feeling it at some point every day in England.

I see this poor dog every morning, I'm gonna give him some food every day and see if I can not see his ribs by the time I leave.

What I have been wondering today is if anyone has written on the joys of total experience, and if there is a proper antonym for experience. By this I mean if experience is that which is 'perienced' externally (I understand the terminology of this argument needs some work) then shouldn't the opposite be something that is 'perienced' internally. E.g. living in your head and coming to conclusions based on your thoughts rather than any action.
I feel like whenever I walk down the street here I totally immersed in experience, and there isn't room for my thoughts in my head. It feels absolutely real.

I went for lunch with Saumya today and we had the best pizza I've had since I got here. However, this isn't really saying much as the others have been from Dominos and Pizza Hut. The base was okay, and the mozzarella didn't have an odd after taste. It was nice to catch up with her since she's been travelling around India on photography missions and I have missed her straightforward way of talking.

61st - afternoon

MY brain has taken a melting from the intense heat.

Friday I was fed channa masala (another name for chole) twice today. People know me as the chole man. I don't mind at all, the more that come my way the better. Preeti brought chole and parantha (that she'd made herself) into the office with her and then there was a high tea to celebrate the IHC cricket team winning their leauge. More chole was on offer and everyone looked so pleased for my sake. It was International Womens Day and I didn't bring flowers and chocolate for the women in the office as I'd threatened. I'll surprise them with it I think.

It was Friday night so we went to Mandy's and sat on her roof and drank and chatted and listened to some music and it felt so good. We slept there as Izzy had packed some toiletries etc. and wanted to be free from the house for the night.

Melting melting melting. I have to wear too many clothes to work here. No shorts allowed.

57th - photos

We are still plodding along with the Dancescapes exhibition which means that I haven t started on the work for the Kama Sutra yet. Which means I might not get in done soon. Which means I might not be able to go to Goa. I have to keep reminding myself of this so that I keep bringing it up to Alka. The book is nearly at the printing stage (my first published bit of writing and editing - not attributed to me of course.)

Mostly, I'm looking forward to it being over so that I can read more stuff like this:

'Her workers swear
       The old sugar press
Though it creaks a lot
       Doesn't ooze much juice.'

and be working..

44th - Photos

Yesterday we had a big meeting at the designer's office. Afterwards Saumya, Mandy and I went for beer and a meal at a place that Mandy has been talking up for a long while called 4S in Defence Colony. It didn't live up to her description of a notorious drinking hall, but the Hakka noodles were really good and the 2 for 1 happy hours certainly made me happy. I left to get back for 10 pm and was a little late so that the new fam would get used to me being a little bit of a wild card, but not too wild.
